Overview

Originally built as a military stronghold in the 18th century by Emperor Joseph II, Terezín is deeply intertwined with the history of World War II.

The more famous Great Fortress, which became the city of Terezín, served as a transit camp for Jews from across Europe and was exploited by the Nazis for propaganda purposes during a 1944 visit by the Red Cross.

The lesser-known Small Fortress, however, was a brutal prison run by the Reich’s secret police, the Gestapo.
